<nw:body>&amp;lt;p style="text-align: left;"&amp;gt;&amp;lt;span style="color: #000000;"&amp;gt;Despite seven fishermen losing their lives at sea this year to date, a laissez-faire attitude to safety still exists in the industry, particularly in relation to the wearing of lifejackets. In an effort to get fishermen to take notice of the real danger of going to sea without wearing a lifejacket, Noel O&amp;rsquo;Sullivan, a fisherman from Castletownbere, Co. &amp;lt;/span&amp;gt;&amp;lt;st1:city&amp;gt;&amp;lt;st1:place&amp;gt;Cork&amp;lt;/st1:place&amp;gt;&amp;lt;/st1:city&amp;gt;&amp;lt;span style="color: #000000;"&amp;gt; will act as Ambassador for the campaign. Noel survived an accident at sea, along with his six crew, when his vessel &amp;lsquo;Discovery&amp;rsquo; capsized off the Isles of Scilly on the 29&amp;lt;sup&amp;gt;th&amp;lt;/sup&amp;gt; January, 2007.&amp;lt;/span&amp;gt;&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;&amp;lt;p style="text-align: left;"&amp;gt;&amp;lt;span style="color: #000000;"&amp;gt;Noel describes the day of the accident&amp;hellip;&amp;lsquo;&amp;lt;i&amp;gt;I will never forget that day. As we were hauling in the catch, I knew there was something wrong. She was listing dangerously and I instructed the crew to launch the life rafts and jump overboard. As we jumped, she listed violently and capsized onto one of the life-rafts - puncturing it&amp;hellip;..I treaded the freezing water for more than two hours until we were rescued&amp;hellip;.. I was terrified going back fishing but I went back as it&amp;rsquo;s my livelihood, it&amp;rsquo;s what I know&amp;hellip;the difference is, I am more aware of the dangers now and I insist all my crew wear lifejackets. I would appeal to all fishermen to do the same&amp;rsquo; (Click on the video below to hear Noel's full story)&amp;lt;/i&amp;gt;&amp;lt;/span&amp;gt;&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;&amp;lt;p style="text-align: left;"&amp;gt;&amp;lt;span style="color: #000000;"&amp;gt;The fatality rate for Irelands fishing sector stands at 88 per 100,000, making it &amp;lt;b&amp;gt;48 times more hazardous&amp;lt;/b&amp;gt; than other occupations*.&amp;nbsp; &amp;lt;b&amp;gt;Wearing a suitable lifejacket is the single most effective measure a fisherman can take to increase the chance of survival if involved in a man-overboard accident at sea.&amp;nbsp; &amp;lt;/b&amp;gt;&amp;lt;/span&amp;gt;&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;&amp;lt;p style="text-align: left;"&amp;gt;&amp;lt;span style="color: #000000;"&amp;gt;Jason Whooley, BIM&amp;rsquo;s CEO appeals to the fishing industry: &amp;lsquo;&amp;lt;i&amp;gt;I am sincerely asking all fishermen to wear their lifejackets. It could be the difference between life and death, it is that simple. Despite being a legal requirement, it is not something that is taken seriously enough in the fishing sector. We aim, along with our partners, IWS and the RNLI, to change this mentality through a targeted and on ongoing safety campaign and I am delighted that Noel, who has personally survived an accident at sea, is helping us to drive this important message home.&amp;rsquo; &amp;nbsp;&amp;lt;/i&amp;gt;&amp;lt;/span&amp;gt;&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;&amp;lt;p style="text-align: left;"&amp;gt;&amp;lt;span style="color: #000000;"&amp;gt;Current RNLI statistics suggest that &amp;lt;b&amp;gt;less than 35%&amp;lt;/b&amp;gt; of fishermen regularly wear a lifejacket.&amp;nbsp; Many fishermen feel that wearing a jacket inhibits their mobility and makes working on deck much more difficult. &amp;nbsp;Part of this awareness campaign will be highlighting that there are a growing range of lifejackets that fishermen can use to suit their method of fishing and skippers and crew have a responsibility to themselves, work colleagues and family to consider the available options. <nw:body>&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;The deal on quotas is estimated to be worth &amp;euro;250 million to the Irish fishing industry and the negotiations have resulted in the reopening of the Irish Sea prawn fishery, part of &amp;lt;st1:country-region&amp;gt;Ireland&amp;lt;/st1:country-region&amp;gt;&amp;rsquo;s overall &amp;euro;52 million prawn industry. The cod quota has increased by 77% in the &amp;lt;st1:place&amp;gt;&amp;lt;st1:placename&amp;gt;Celtic&amp;lt;/st1:placename&amp;gt; &amp;lt;st1:placetype&amp;gt;Sea&amp;lt;/st1:placetype&amp;gt;&amp;lt;/st1:place&amp;gt;. &amp;lt;st1:place&amp;gt;&amp;lt;st1:placename&amp;gt;Celtic&amp;lt;/st1:placename&amp;gt; &amp;lt;st1:placetype&amp;gt;Sea&amp;lt;/st1:placetype&amp;gt;&amp;lt;/st1:place&amp;gt; haddock and whiting quotas have also been increased by 25% and 15% respectively. &amp;lt;st1:place&amp;gt;&amp;lt;st1:placename&amp;gt;Celtic&amp;lt;/st1:placename&amp;gt; &amp;lt;st1:placetype&amp;gt;Sea&amp;lt;/st1:placetype&amp;gt;&amp;lt;/st1:place&amp;gt; herring increases by 60%.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;The recent TACs and Quota negotiations have also delivered significant increases in &amp;lt;st1:country-region&amp;gt;&amp;lt;st1:place&amp;gt;Ireland&amp;lt;/st1:place&amp;gt;&amp;lt;/st1:country-region&amp;gt;&amp;rsquo;s quota of boarfish (+155% or an increase of 34,439 tonnes next year) and blue whiting (+532% or an increase of 6,311 tonnes next year). Overall, &amp;lt;st1:country-region&amp;gt;&amp;lt;st1:place&amp;gt;Ireland&amp;lt;/st1:place&amp;gt;&amp;lt;/st1:country-region&amp;gt;&amp;rsquo;s quota of pelagic species is up&amp;nbsp;by&amp;nbsp;49%, year-on-year.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;

<nw:body>&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Yawl Bay Seafood&amp;rsquo;s new quality cooked crab products &amp;ndash; 100g vacuum packed packages of crab toes and crabmeat &amp;ndash; have been created by David Browne, the second generation of this family business, who has been working on the range for the past three years. David started trialing the new products 18 months ago, under the guidance of Dr Susan Steele and John Fagan at the &amp;lt;st1:city&amp;gt;&amp;lt;st1:place&amp;gt;Cork&amp;lt;/st1:place&amp;gt;&amp;lt;/st1:city&amp;gt; based Seafood Development Centre (SDC).&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;&amp;nbsp;The SDC offers the facility to research, develop and pilot new products before companies commit to full commercialisation and capital investment costs. Dr. Susan Steele, BIM&amp;rsquo;s Seafood Innovation Coordinator explains how BIM assisted in the product development: &amp;lsquo;&amp;lt;i&amp;gt;We thoroughly enjoyed working with David on this unique product. This product appears simple but it took over nine months of constant trial and error to get it right so the development path was far from simple. The quality of the crab used in this product is second to none. Luxury products are not usually associated with a long shelf-life but this product has broken the mould. I have no doubt that David and his team will be inundated with orders from top restaurants and retailers as a result&amp;rsquo; &amp;lt;/i&amp;gt;&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;&amp;lt;i&amp;gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;lt;/i&amp;gt;&amp;lsquo;For 25 years we have focused on producing premium quality seafood products,&amp;rdquo; says David Browne of Yawl Bay Seafood, &amp;ldquo;&amp;lt;i&amp;gt;with our own smoked salmon being the backbone of our business. <nw:body>&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Pat and Paul O'Connell's&amp;nbsp;business experienced a substantial increase in overseas sales following the Queen's visit to their stall in the English market in May&amp;nbsp;and the brothers decided to seize the opportunity and expand. They were assisted by Dr. Susan Steele and her team&amp;nbsp;in BIM's Seafood Development Centre (SDC) in Clonakilty.&amp;nbsp;The SDC team provided support for O&amp;rsquo;Connells who wanted to move from retail into value adding. The team worked on different value added propositions including the smoking machine.&amp;nbsp;The SDC aims to help companies to overcome the risks linked with innovation and to help to overcome the hurdles associated with developing new ventures. In this case, assistance was given with developing new products, locating and setting up a premises, sourcing ingredients, packaging and advice on innovation and new product development.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;The newly opened smokehouse located in Bandon, Co. Cork could create up to eight jobs next year if the venture is a success.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;

<nw:body>&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;BIM will be applying for an Aquaculture Foreshore licence by the end of January 2012 with the intention of developing a deep sea fish farming production area in the lee of Inis Oirr.&amp;nbsp; The deep sea licence application, if successful, will allow for 15,000 tonnes of organic grade farmed salmon to be produced per annum.&amp;nbsp; This will double the current production of Irish farmed salmon and meet the urgent demand for this premium product.&amp;nbsp;&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;&amp;nbsp;We are currently turning customers away because &amp;lt;st1:country-region&amp;gt;&amp;lt;st1:place&amp;gt;Ireland&amp;lt;/st1:place&amp;gt;&amp;lt;/st1:country-region&amp;gt; does not produce enough to meet the demand for this product.&amp;nbsp; If the licence application is successful and production goes ahead the farm will generate over &amp;euro;100 million in sales and create up to 350 direct jobs, with a further 150 jobs indirectly.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;In a new departure BIM will apply for the licence and if granted we will then hold the license in trust for the State and will enter into a legal &amp;lsquo;franchise&amp;rsquo; style agreement with the operator of the farm.&amp;nbsp; BIM believes this is an opportunity to build safeguards into the commercial agreement that will surpass the demands of the licence itself. &amp;nbsp;For example, we hope to include clauses in the commercial agreement with the operator obliging them to support local community development and other initiatives.&amp;nbsp; BIM have also committed to working with the local communities to ensure the resident workforce has the necessary qualifications to be able to work on the farm.&amp;nbsp;&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;&amp;nbsp;A further primary agreement of the franchise will be that the salmon must be farmed to stringent organic standards.&amp;nbsp; This will ensure that the strictest environmental and husbandry standards will apply to all farming on the site.&amp;nbsp; It also makes excellent business sense, as the organic food sector continues to grow rapidly.&amp;nbsp; BIM and Bord Bia estimate that the current underlying demand for organic grade farmed salmon per annum in Europe is somewhere in the region of 40,000 - 50,000 tonnes of organic grade farmed salmon per annum.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;&amp;nbsp;BIM have made a huge effort to meet and brief as many of the local development committees and other interested parties in the locality.&amp;nbsp; The aim is to ensure that people understand what the project is about, the reasons why BIM are sure of its commercial success and the safeguards that BIM will oversee to ensure all environmental and other local concerns are addressed on an ongoing basis.&amp;nbsp;&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;&amp;nbsp;Currently well over 700 scoping letters have been sent to a wide variety of stakeholders including local businesses, tourism interests, fishermen, fish processors and all households on the three Aran Islands.&amp;nbsp; All feedback received on foot of the letters will be incorporated into the Environmental Impact Assessment that BIM will submit to the Department with the licence application.&amp;nbsp; BIM hope to have the application completed by the end of January.&amp;nbsp; The usual public consultation process will begin at this point.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;&amp;nbsp;Further information on the project can be found on the BIM website, &amp;lt;a href="http://news.bim.ie/l904vmwgom9"&amp;gt;www.bim.ie&amp;lt;/a&amp;gt; or by contacting &amp;lt;a href="mailto:deepsea@bim.ie"&amp;gt;deepsea@bim.ie&amp;lt;/a&amp;gt;&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;
